How to achieve better product sales

Comprehensive description + user care

Contents...

The sales volume of an app, plugin, widget, or design theme very much depend, among other factors, on how attractive your product is presented on Webasyst Store. Follow these few recommendations to achieve better sales.

Description

Compose the description text in such a way that it is comprehensible for an ordinary Internet user as hardly all of your clients are specialists in the website development or in the configuration of web servers. Should you need to use technical terms, try to add an explanatory comment or a figure, where appropriate.

Format your product’s description to make it convenient to read — split the text into paragraphs, add subtitles, add formatting for lists and quotes, use colorful Font Awesome icons. For all this, you can use Webasyst 2 CSS classes from the wa-2.0.css file, which is used on Webasyst Store pages, too.

Product description

Upload figures and videos to the product profile. To make your figures more descriptive, add arrows and captions to them. Include a voice audio track in your video guides, where possible. Certainly, watching a video with background music is more fun than in total silence, but music may also distract one’s attention and even be annoying to some people. When you explain something in voice, however, you can point the listeners’ attention to some important items which might remain unnoticed otherwise.

Video & figures

Publish a user guide; e.g., on a separate page within the product profile. This may be useful even for the software products that are relatively easy to set up and use.

  • Your clients will see that you are a responsible developer and that you care about their best experience. This will inspire more confidence in you and will positively affect the number of purchased licenses.
  • You will save time on the user support because many of your clients will read all the important points in the documentation and will not need to contact your for consultations.
Documentation for users

Try to follow grammar rules when writing texts. Even if you are not philologist by education, at least copy your text to any program with a built-in spell checker. By fixing some errors and typos this way, you will make reading your product’s description more enjoyable.

If possible, ask a professional to proofread your text. From their comments, you will get ideas on how to better write other descriptions in the future.

Opportunity to test-run your product

Add a link to a demo site, or a demo account, and enable the 7-day trial period for your product. When a client can try it out before payment, it is definitely an advantage that should contribute to a future purchase.

Pricing

Run promo discount campaigns. Products with enabled discounts are displayed in a dedicated section in Installer. This way you can better stand out with a special offer and attract more attention than in long common product listings.

Discount campaign

Sometimes it may be useful to simply lower the price if you are getting too few license orders. Quite often, you can get more sales by setting a lower price than by waiting for more expensive but far fewer orders. Besides, the more licenses you sell the greater is the probability of receiving high ratings from a larger number of new clients. Positive ratings attract more new clients with even more orders, and so on.

Time-limited licenses

In addition to selling ordinary, lifetime licenses, you can also sell annual and monthly licenses for third-party servers as well as monthly Webasyst Cloud hosted licenses. It is at the same time a convenient access for users to your product and a good opportunity to earn more:

  • If a client pays for 2 annual licenses successively it may be more profitable than the purchase of 1 lifetime license.
  • If a client pays for 12 monthly licenses successively it may be more profitable than the purchase an annual or a lifetime license.

Make a little calculation and choose the price levels that are both profitable to you and psychologically acceptable to clients. Some users prefer to pay a relatively small amount once a month rather than to spend a considerable amount at once. Some may not have the whole required amount available to purchase a full license, and with a time-limited payment option they start using your product and paying you money right away.

User reviews

Quickly respond to user reviews — fix found bugs and add comments to tell users that you have seen their message and are working on it. This will show your responsible attitude to software product’s quality. Many clients read other’s reviews before placing an order, and your constant work there will positively influence their decision to make a purchase.

Working with user reviews

Whether you need to respond to reviews with high ratings is up to you to decide. However, keep in mind that your comments should always be useful. For instance, standard lengthy replies like “Thank you for a high rating of our software product! Best regards, XYZ Team” will tell very little about you, except maybe about a well-established work on reviews. But they will hardly tell anything about the quality of such work and will definitely add to visual clutter interfering with comfortable reading of the reviews page.

Look from the client’s perspective

Always try to put yourself in the shoes of a potential client and to assume what a client might be thinking about when looking for an app, plugin, or design theme; what might be important to them; what questions they would like to quickly find answers to.

When your clients send you pre-sale requests and ask you various questions, be sure to include your answers also in the product description. Such real feedback will help you make it more detailed and useful, and will thus convince your clients that you are a developer who cares. It is exactly the type of seller people like buying things from.
